The UK Countryside

England’s green and pleasant land

I’ve only left London once while on vacation when we tried to drive the entire country in 3 weeks. We failed. These scanned film images are from that trip and include Bath, Wells, York, the Yorkshire Dales and Robin Hood’s Bay.

However, I was lucky enough to visit Pinewood Studios several times for work. I remember the Gaultier clad models from Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element” eating together in the Canteen and a grumpy John Cleese piloting a golf cart off the set of “A Fish Called Wanda”. But mostly I remember being chilled to the bone in an ancient hotel in Beaconsfield where the heat did not exist. After trying to sleep with all my clothes on, I called the front desk and complained that it was “almost 40 degrees in my room!” A very surprised night manager arrived looking like his last job had been shouting at sheep. He proceeded to look around carefully and fully investigate why my room was so hot when the heat was clearly off. He was disappointed to find that I was complaining in Fahrenheit and he was listening in Celsius.
