Glen Park Canyon
A steep city park with views, fog and nearby feasting.
Glen Park Canyon is almost 70 acres of steep hills, climbing rocks and paths at the southern edge of San Francisco. At one time it held a zoo with elephants and a high wire act, but today it is just a great way to get a challenging nature hike while still in the middle of an urban environment.
You might spot a hawk or a coyote (keep Fluffy on a leash!) and, if you look carefully, goats mowing the grass! I use it as a beautiful cut through on my way up to Twin Peaks.
Less fog.
Taking the jobs Americans won’t do?
The entrances to the canyon are many and it survives right up against the little downtown area of Glen Park with easy access to Glen Park BART station. Staying in Glen Park while visiting SF is an easy BART ride into the City or for driving down the peninsula with an entrance right to Rt. 280. Check out the jazz concerts at the Bird and Becket bookstore, the hot sausage omelet at Tygers, the puttanesca crepe at Higher Ground Coffee House, the super baby fish burritos at La Corneta, classic French cuisine at P’tit Laurent or the Neapolitan pizza at Gialina pizzeria. Or stock up on enlightened yet still upscale groceries and sandwiches at Canyon Market.
