The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Effective political theater since 1979.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a charity, protest and street performance group that has worked for over 40 years to call attention to sexual intolerance, safe sex and to satirize issues around gender and morality. More recently they are speaking out against racism and police brutality. They do this through the use of outrageous and, for some, offensive “nun drag”. The shock value is a feature not a bug.

They are not meant to appear as classic drag queens (check out the facial hair!), but really take on the role of nuns who minister to their community. By appearing at San Francisco events and creating some of their own, they have been able to raise over $1 mil since 1979. They also give grants to underfunded, smaller organizations and projects providing direct services to SF communities.

Calling themselves “sacred clowns” the Sisters are meant to be outrageous, campy and amusing for a good cause and are not shy about getting their picture taken by some random straight guy. To donate click here.
